Micro asphalt surface repairs and maintenance in Oxfordshire

Repairing cracks and potholes early delays costly road resurfacing by up to a decade.

Micro asphalt (also called ‘micro surfacing’) is a low-cost, eco-friendly surface treatment that’s laid over the top of an existing surface to repair, seal and protect it. This substantially extends the lifespan of roads, driveways, car parks, pathways and other surfaces, saving you a lot of money and time.

Unlike full resurfacing, cold-mix micro asphalt has very few pre-patch requirements. And it’s ready for traffic within just 30 minutes of application. So we can patch up damaged surfaces quickly and affordably with minimal disruption.

Contact Hazell & Jefferies Ltd today to arrange micro asphalt surfacing in Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Reading and the surrounding areas, or the wider UK for large-scale projects.

What is micro asphalt used for?

  • Surface repairs: Once a pothole or fretting appears, every passing vehicle weakens the surrounding asphalt and enlarges the affected area. Micro asphalt repairs the failed section before the damage spreads, helping you avoid larger and more costly repair works
  • Preventive maintenance: Traffic gradually wears away a road surface. But sealing the surface with a protective micro asphalt layer greatly extends its lifespan, preserving the existing road and delaying full resurfacing
  • Rut correction: Heavy vehicles repeatedly follow the same wheel paths, creating shallow ruts that collect water and stress the surface. Restoring the original road profile with micro asphalt improves drainage and slows further deterioration
  • Surface levelling: Settlement and previous repairs can leave isolated low spots that collect water and create an uneven driving surface. Micro asphalt treatments corrects these low spots, improving ride quality and protecting against wear
  • Restoring skid resistance: Years of braking and cornering gradually polish the road surface, reducing grip between tyres and the carriageway. But a fresh layer of micro asphalt restores surface texture, improving traction and shortening braking distances

Micro asphalt FAQs

What is micro asphalt?

Micro asphalt is a cold-mix surfacing treatment made from a blend of bitumen emulsion and fine aggregates. It’s an effective preventative maintenance measure that slows deterioration on roads that are still functional but are showing early signs of wear.

The mixture fills in shallow imperfections, improving skid resistance and protecting the surface against further damage from vehicles and water penetration. This helps keep your road surface in good condition for several more years before full resurfacing becomes necessary.

When is micro asphalt used?

It’s best to apply micro asphalt paving when a surface is still structurally sound but beginning to age.

You can use it to treat light cracking, surface polishing and slight rutting, sealing defects and delaying the need for full resurfacing.

What surfaces can be repaired with micro asphalt?

You can repair most asphalt and tarmac surfaces with micro asphalt paving, as long as the base layers remain stable.

Residential streets, estate roads, cycle paths, car parks and lightly trafficked access routes all respond well. But areas with deep potholes, heavy cracking or subsidence need more extensive repair than micro asphalt can offer.

How much does micro asphalt surfacing cost?

Most micro asphalt treatments cost around £4-£8 per square metre for standard residential or estate roads.

Larger areas with straightforward access often fall at the lower end of that range. But smaller or steeper sites can be more expensive, especially if they need preparation such as patching or edge repairs before treatment.

How long does it take to lay micro asphalt?

Since micro asphalt is a cold-mix treatment, installation, setting and curing are fairly quick.

We can complete smaller roads in just a few hours. And even larger sites generally take no more than one working day.

Once the material has set and cured (which often happens the same day), the road can reopen. This keeps traffic disruptions to a minimum, especially compared to full resurfacing.

How long do micro asphalt surfacing repairs last?

Most micro asphalt repairs last for 5-10 years depending on traffic levels and local conditions.

Because the treatment seals the surface against water ingress, deterioration slows significantly. This makes micro asphalt repairs a reliable part of a cost-effective surface maintenance plan.
