Why You Need High-Quality Surface Dressing

The quality of your surface dressing affects the safety and durability of your road or pathway. Surfacing your road after damage or wear restores its waterproofing qualities, provides adequate skid resistance and slows future decay.

Hazell & Jefferies provides expert road maintenance services for civil, commercial and domestic projects. We complete repairs quickly at a reasonable price, and minimise disruption to normal traffic. That means you receive high-quality road surface dressing that accurately meets your needs, schedule and budget.

When is road surface dressing necessary?

Contact us right away if you notice any of these road condition problems.

Vehicle skidding

Road wear increases the risk of skidding and crashes, especially on bends and junctions. Surface dressing waterproofs the road and increases traction, making it safe for drivers

Cracks or holes

Water that enters gaps will freeze and thaw, causing cracks to grow larger. Sealing the surface prevents water penetration and slows decay

Uneven surfaces

Continuous traffic degrades a road surface in different places. Replacing loose material and smoothing out bumps ensures a smoother, safer drive and guards against wear

Pooling water

A worn, compacted or uneven layer prevents water from draining away. Road surface dressing restores proper camber and drainage properties

WE PROVIDE ALL TYPES OF SURFACE DRESSING:

  • Single Dressing: Ideal for existing bitumen roads. We apply binder and cover it with a layer of compacted aggregate. Used to repair minor damage or wear.
  • Double Dressing: Involves a single dressing followed by a second layer of binding and aggregate for superior strength and a smoother finish. Suitable for new road surfaces, or existing bitumen roads in very poor condition.
  • Pad Coat Dressing: A light application of binder and small chippings creates a uniform surface on a newly constructed cement-stabilised road base or dense crushed rock base. Further surface dressings are applied on this preliminary covering.
  • Racked Dressing: Uses two layers of pad coat, the second with smaller chippings to lock in the first and provide added stability. Recommended for areas with fast or heavy traffic as there’s less risk of dislodged chippings.
  • Sandwich Dressing: Layers of chippings are applied before single dressing. Used on existing binder-rich roads, or on gradients to reduce binder flow.

We also offer repair or replacement services for smaller projects like footpaths and driveways.

Surface dressing vs full resurfacing: Which do you need?

Surface dressing is a preventative mainten

Our Work and Projects
ance measure that protects roads in decent condition. Each dressing lasts for around 10 years, and roads can be resurfaced up to three times. This is a quick, cost-effective treatment that helps you save money by delaying road replacement.

But if your road is severely damaged, you’ll need to resurface it completely. Road resurfacing involves removing portions of damaged road and laying a new surface to replace it. It restores the road to optimal condition, but it’s around five times more expensive than surface dressing.

As expert road surface dressing and resurfacing contractors, we can recommend the right solution to minimise costs and extend surface lifespan as much as possible. Get in touch for honest, upfront advice on what’s best for you.

Road surface dressing FAQs

What is road surface dressing?
Road surface dressing is a preventative treatment for roads still in good condition. It protects the surface against wear and waterproofs your road, driveway or pathway to help prevent potholes forming.
How often should I get road surface dressing?
You should schedule road surface dressing as soon as you spot warning signs like low traction, cracks or uneven camber. But even if you can’t see any damage, it’s best to arrange surface dressing every seven to 10 years. This guards your road against future harm and saves you money in the long run.
How does road surface dressing work?
The exact process for road surface dressing depends on the type of dressing you need. But the general process is fairly simple.  We start by sealing existing potholes and making sure the surface is even. Then we apply layers of bitumen binder and stone chippings before compacting them with a roller. This sets quickly, and traffic helps press the stone chippings further into the bitumen. After a while, we return to the site to sweep away any loose stone chippings that haven’t bedded down.
How long does surface dressing take?
Surface dressing is a very quick process, especially compared to resurfacing. We usually finish even large projects within a single day. That also means any road closures are short.
