Structural

CX’ means the concrete mix has a guaranteed compressive strength of X N/mm2 after a 28-day curing period.

  • C40: Ultra-high strength mix used in civil engineer and aggressive environments. For bridge abutments and deep foundation piles

Non-structural

What are custom concrete mixes used for?

Custom concrete mixes are useful when you need concrete to behave in a particular way during installation or after it cures.

For example, high-strength mixes are essential for columns that support several storeys. But you’ll need a more workable mix if it needs to flow through a concrete pump.

Changing the proportions of cement, water and aggregates, or adding specialist admixtures, allows your concrete to meet your specific requirements better than relying on standard ready-mixed concrete.

Why are custom concrete mixes better than ready-mix concrete?

Standard ready-mix concrete rarely delivers the exact quality your project needs. It might be far stronger than necessary, inflating costs. Or it might lack the durability you need for safe, long-lasting construction

What’s the difference between structural and non-structural concrete?

Structural concrete forms a load-bearing part of a building or structure. So its strength directly affects whether that structure can safely carry its intended weight. Foundations supporting buildings, columns carrying upper floors, and reinforced slabs all require structural concrete.

Non-structural concrete, on the other hand, doesn’t carry the main load that keeps a building or structure standing. Instead, it provides support, stability and a solid base for other elements that don’t normally affect the structural integrity of a building. That makes it useful for kerb backing, pipe surroundings, drainage works and based beneath paving.

How long does concrete take to cure?

Concrete hardens enough to walk on after around 24-48 hours under normal conditions.

But it takes around 28 days to cure fully. This is the point at which strength is usually assessed.

The exact curing time depends on the mix, load, and conditions like temperature or weather. So be sure to check the requirements of your particular concrete mix before putting it to use.

Can concrete be poured in cold or wet weather?

Yes – if you manage those conditions carefully.

Cold weather slows curing, and freezing can damage concrete before it’s reached its expected strength. And heavy rain can wash cement from the surface or introduce unwanted water into an exposed pour. So you’ll need to ensure suitable protection and adjustments to the concrete mix to continue work in less-favourable weather.

But under particularly heavy conditions, it’s usually better to postpone your work.
